Introduction
In 1995, I read Amazing Grace, the story of children in America’s poorest Congressional district. The district is in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Out of 800 children, 7 did not qualify for a free lunch.
I also found myself asking the question, “How many strong churches are there between Central Park and Wall Street, on the world’s most influential island?” I could not identify 10. An estimate of the residential midtown evangelical population is .5%.
In 1998, a colleague and I conducted a survey of my zip code of 11355 in Flushing, Queens. We talked to Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, and local church leaders. Every group had the same challenge. They were all losing the presence and participation of their youth.
What do these three experiences have in common? They each represent the enormous need, and historic opportunity for the faith community to make a difference together in Greater New York.
Consider a snapshot of the needs
· There are now 2,000 Hispanic churches in New York City. 80% of Hispanic pastors are bi-vocational with little access to training resources. As many as 80% of all Puerto Ricans will never have a meaningful Anglo relationship (Manny Ortiz, The Hispanic Challenge, InterVarsity Press). We must help leaders to bridge the resource, training and ethnic gaps within the region.
· Of the 1.1 million children in New York City Public Schools, 60-70% test below national math and reading levels. Cities like Newark, Paterson, Bridgeport, and Hempstead also face enormous public school education challenges. We must help our youth today to become successful leaders.
· A high percentage of marketplace leaders are fearful of expressing their faith at work or even living out their faith ethically based on the results of sessions held in 2007 (Tony Carnes, International Research for Values Change). We must provide a place and an opportunity for marketplace leaders to network, collaborate and support one another.
· Greater New York has 1/300 of the world’s population, and at 22 million people it is larger than Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Boston, Miami, and Seattle combined. We must reduce the spiritual and social needs through a united church and innovative initiatives by penetrating the population strata.
· Early in 2008, 1,400 leaders were convened by The New York City Leadership Center to be envisioned and trained by Rick Warren and Bill Hybels in 10 different areas within our region. We must grow the effectiveness and impact of outreach efforts through best-of-class training by experts.
What could happen if pastors, marketplace leaders, mission agency leaders, and emerging leaders were working together in a series of intelligent, well coordinated efforts to impact the region socially and spiritually?
· Pastors and churches mobilized by region across Greater New York, working simultaneously to serve their communities and draw attention to a united faith community loving their neighbors and each other.
· Pastors and mission agency directors invited to experience the best national training available.
· Marketplace leaders given an opportunity to connect with each other at a regional level, discovering their passions, and connecting with service opportunities cross-culturally.
· Pastors, marketplace leaders, and emerging leaders linked in a strategy to serve the public schools of our region and the 2 million students in New York City.
· National ministry and marketplace leaders pooling their resources and influence to impact Greater New York
